2004 East Coast Tionól
Halloween Weekend:
Friday, October 29th - Monday, November 1st
Mick
O'Brien And Caoimhin
O Raghallaigh
Please pre-register
by Saturday, October 23 to ensure space availability. Any registrations
after October 23rd must be taken care of at the tionol. Please keep in
mind that room availability is limited and pre-registration
is recommended.
In
conjunction with the Southern
California Uilleann Pipers Club, our
guests for the 2004 East Coast Tionól will include Dublin piper Mick O'Brien and
fiddler/piper Caoimhin
O'Raghallaigh. You are
undoubtedly familiar with Mick O'Brien, who is well known in the piping
world from his early days when he recorded Flags of Dublin through his
first solo recording in 1996, May Morning Dew, to his latest recording
with fiddler/piper Caoimhin O'Raghallaigh, Kitty Lie Over. Caoimhin
O'Raghallaigh is a fantastic young fiddler from Dublin, who also
happens to be a very fine piper and is presently living in Miltown
Malbay, Co. Clare, learning to make pipes. In addition to the recording
he and Mick released to great acclaim last year (it was selected as the
#1 Traditional Album of 2003 by the Irish Echo), Caoimhin has recorded
a solo fiddle CD, Turas Go Tir na Nog.
In a departure from our previous tionols, this year's event will take
place festively on Halloween weekend, beginning on Friday evening,
October 29th and ending Monday morning after breakfast, November 1st.
We will hold the tionol at the Fern
Cliff House in the Catskills town
of East Durham, about two
hours
north of New York City. East Durham is
well known in the Irish music and dance community for its annual music
events, including the Irish Arts Week in July.
In addition to Mick and Caoimhin, Waterford piper David Power will join
us, as will Limerick piper Mickey
Dunne, and Toronto piper Debbie
Quigley. Pipemaker Nick Whitmer
will preside over the reedmaking
workshops, while Patrick
Hutchinson and Benedict
Koehler offer private
lessons for those who want an extra boost. Dr. Hutchinson, in his
ethnomusicologist's hat, will also entertain us with an informative
presentation on the piping of the masters Seamus Ennis, Willie Clancy
and Tommy Reck.
This year, we will also have a full fiddle component to our weekend. Patrick Ourceau,
whose recording Tracin' with Gearoid O'hAllmhurain,
brought his skills as a fiddler to the forefront, will join Caoimhim
O'Raghallaigh in teaching fiddle classes throughout the weekend.
There will also be a flute
workshop with Mike McHale held at Furlong's Pub in East Durham on
October 30th. See
registration page for details.
Because we have expanded the tionol through until Monday morning, the
registration cost will be a bit higher this year. But at $85 it is
still a great value. And that increase will be more than offset by the
fantastic rate our hosts at the Fern Cliff are giving us. For both
accommodations and all our meals, we will be charged $185 per person
(three nights
and all the meals, including Friday dinner and Monday breakfast). For
those who can stay only two nights, the cost is $135 per person. Please
do not
call Ferncliff directly for accommodations. If you contact
Susanne Ward
(207-594-5434) she will
manage the reservations. Thank you.
Rooms at the Ferncliff will be double occupancy. On your
registration form please indicate whether you have a preferred roommate
otherwise you will be assigned a roommate.
For those who would like a single room or a quieter location
try
McKenna's Irish House, Route 145, East Durham, NY 12423. Please contact
them directly at (518)-634-7681. Another location to
consider is Furlong's Riverside Inn and Pub also on Route 145 in East
Durham (518)-634-7687. Those of you who have been to
the Irish festivals in East Durham will no doubt be familiar with
these well known locations.
For additional
suggestions of accommodations, try the Town of Durham home page.
Mark your calendars now, and start on that costume so you can outfit
your instrument to win the "Best Costume" prize at the Sunday night
Halloween party.

In addition to the teachers and organizers of this event we are
grateful to all who have so generously contributed time, information
content, and pictures. Particular thanks to Patrick D'Arcy who
designed the original site, provided time and technical guidance, and
also contributed the picture of Mick for his bio page. Also
thanks to Peter
Laban who gave us permission to use the home page picture of Mick and Caoimhin.
